Greco 2014 Toledo

In April it will be 400 years since the death of El Greco, the Cretan artist from the late Renaissance, author of masterpieces such as The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, or Gentleman with his Hand on his Chest. Today he is considered as one of the great masters of Western art due to his extraordinary grasp of light and colour, his stylized characters and unearthly scenes.

El Greco developed most of his career in Toledo, the old religious capital of Spain and one of the most important cities in Europe. Today, our city pays tribute to this great art figure with an ambitious activities programme in the IV centenary of his death that, under the title El Greco 2014, encompass from concerts to gastronomic samplings as well as official tributes, conferences and, of course, art exhibitions.

Activities of the IV Centenary of El Greco

The centenary celebrations began just a few days ago with a unique Bell Concert. Toledo was wrapped in a symphony of air and metal with the unified ringing of fifty bells from 17 different points in the city.

Every month there will be shows in the streets and squares of Toledo, such as historical representations of his time, fireworks, circus, theatre, dance and other performing arts.

Out of all the activities programme, it is important to highlight the exhibition “El Griego de Toledo”, a great retrospective on the artist that will gather, from the 14th of March until the 14th of June, more than 100 works of the artist from more than thirty different cities in the world.

Another important landmark in the celebrations will take place on April 7th. Coinciding with the anniversary of El Greco’s death, at midday there will be a liturgical event in Toledo Cathedral with a Renaissance music concert. The band Ensemble Plus Ultra will perform, under the guidance of Michael Noone, Requiem by Cristóbal Morales.

Also, the board of the El Greco 2014 Foundation has prepared a gastronomic programme for the centenary, Saborea Greco, with samplings, wine tastings and other proposals to discover the local cuisine.

Greco Spaces

Most of these activities will take place close to our hotel, in a series of cultural spaces that belong to the old town of Toledo. All of them are located less than a 15-minute walk from our hotel:

  1. Toledo Cathedral (5-minute walk), a stunning art gallery with more than 20 works by El Greco.
  2. Santa Cruz Museum (5-minute walk), the main venue of the exhibition El Griego de Toledo.
  3. Church of Santo Tomé (10-minute walk), the place where the painting of The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is kept, one of El Greco’s masterpieces.
  4. Convent of Santo Domingo el Antiguo (100-minute walk,) , where we can see the works St John Evangelist, St John the Baptist and The Resurrection of Christ with St Ildefonso.
